Possible Tournaments

Hello Everyone,

Well we certainly need to get back into the swing of things. This past Saturday July 5th we had a fun day  at the Ethan Caldwell Memorial Informal Pick-Up Softball Game. Lots of fielding and hitting practice, playing a little, and enjoying the summer weather. Unfortunately we didn’t have enough people to seriously play a game. Only about 2 short to be honest. Still we met some cool people once we were getting tired and packing up. These guys said they would love to join us on Saturdays, so things are looking up for our participation rates!

We would love to be able to play more games this summer to prepare for a couple tournaments we are thinking of entering. One is the Mass Mixed Tournament in Taunton, MA July 26th and 27th. The other is the Northeast Mix NIT in Leominster, MA September 6th and 7th.

We are interested in whether or not this is something that interests you? And as always, hope to see you this weekend for our Saturday July 12th game at 2:00PM.

Softball 08 – UPDATE

Hey Everyone,

Softball has kind of died down recently, which sucks. And the previous post alluding to a game this weekend is a lie. Fathers Day weekend! How could we have forgotten? June is a ridiculously busy month for some strange reason. But we have good news for those of you itching to play. This week we finally got our permit in the mail! Yes, it is official, the Cleveland Circle field is ours from 2PM to 6PM every Saturday until the end of August. If necessary we are now able to kick people off “our” field! :-)

The other good news is that there will definitely, absolutely, beyond a shadow of a doubt, be a softball game happening next weekend Saturday June 21st! I swear to you nothing will get in the way this weekend. So head to the batting cages, play catch in the park, and maybe take some laps around the block to get ready. It may be approaching 100 degrees outside, but damn it we are playing softball!

I Miss Softball…

Unfortunately, due to graduations from college and high school, two weddings, and some birthday parties, softball has not and will not be every Saturday like we hoped. There is no softball this weekend but begin planning for the next game Saturday June 14th at 2:00PM. We hope for a big turnout now that you are all rested!

The B-Ball Game

Saturday May 24th, from Nathan’s email:

Thanks to everyone who showed up for basketball last week, we played a couple of very close games. It went well despite the monstrous rims that seemed to determined to reject any ball that so much as touched them and the fact that a disproportionate number of us are horribly out of shape. The light/white team, made up of Don, Jed, Cory, Tellef, and Pat, took on the dark/non-white team: myself, Chuck, Justin, Walsh, and Ethan. With Jed and Cory on the same team, the lights had an undeniable height advantage, but the darks stayed in it, taking advantage of Justin’s height, Chuck’s speed, and Walsh’s rebounding skills. The game was close, but ended 11-9 in favor of the dark team. The second game was closer still after the light team added Little Lebowski (sorry, I never got his real name). After neither team could gain a 2-point advantage, we went to overtime. The intensity increased, with steals and rebounds going both ways, until Walsh reached back for a little something extra and sank a key jump shot to win the game for the dark team, 14-12 (I think).

So, due to lack of interest or just a busy weekend, last week’s softball game was canceled. Perhaps this was best since it rained a lot Saturday all day.

This week’s game will be Saturday May 10th at 2:00PM and we plan on playing at the Cleveland Circle fields again. Hopefully we can have two full teams and great weather this week. See you there!

Game 3 of the season will be Saturday May 3rd @ 2:00PM. This week after softball we are planning on going out after the game to celebrate Nathan and Ethan’s graduation! Any suggestions on where to go/what to do will be taken into consideration.

Hope to see you there!

Wrapup: Game 2, 4-26-08

We played game 2 of the young softball season yesterday, a game between the aptly-named Team 1 (Megan, Ryan, Cory, Pat B, Lisa, David B, Dan, Allan, and Chris) and the Fighting Mongooses (Pat C, Walsh, Sharon, Bill, Ethan, Marcie, Nate, Dave R, Tellef). It was a great day for a game, sunny and cool, but not cold. Lauren opted not to play after injuring her back blasting a 500+ foot home run in batting practice. Sharon and Marcie were both playing hurt, battling various debilitating leg injuries.

It started off as a pitcher’s duel, with both team’s offenses struggling to get going. After three innings, the score was just 4-2 in favor of Team 1, with Pat C scoring both of the Mongooses’ runs, one on his home run to lead off the game, while pitchers Bill and Lisa shut down most of the offense.

The Mongooses found their bats in the middle innings, exploding for 17 runs through the fourth, fifth and sixth. Bill helped his own cause in that time, picking up five RBIs and jacking a three-run home run. Team 1 put up six runs in the fifth, helped by home runs from Pat B and Dave B, as well as some heads up baserunning by Chris to get out of a rundown, reaching third just ahead of Walsh’s throw from the ground. In the sixth, though, they found themselves set down in order by the Mongoose’s new ace pitcher, Tellef.

One must mention the amazing throw by Dave R. from center field to the third baseman Pat C. While Bill attempted to cut off the throw, the sun was clearly in his (and Pat’s) eyes since no one saw the ball till it was almost too late. Yes, Pat’s cat-like reaction saved his future offspring from Dave’s wrath! Everyone held their breath for a moment before laughing hysterically. Since the pack of cigarettes in his pocket cushioned the blow, Pat gives the credit for his narrow escape to his smoking habit. Ironic?

Team 1 got seven more runs in the seventh, including Cory’s three-run shot to right. Meanwhile, Lisa set about shutting down the Mongoose offense. Only Bill and Marcie were able to produce any runs in the seventh, and the team couldn’t get anything at all going in the eighth and ninth.

But in the late innings, Team 1 would come back with a vengeance, tying the game in the eighth. In the ninth, Marcie, despite her injury, made a great catch behind the plate on a foul ball by Chris to help her team’s progress toward damming the Ones’ raging torrent of runs. Megan, Ryan, and Cory scored two runs each in that inning alone and, in the end, Team 1 put the Mongooses away with a final score of 31-21.

Sorry, no pics this week that I know of. If someone snuck a camera in, send the shots along to me and I’ll post them in our bucket.
